The transformation of The Big Red House
Discover the journey of transforming a house with a peculiar past into a beloved home. Learn about the challenges faced, the dedicated individuals who made a difference, and the unique character that now defines The Big Red House.

The ambitious boiler project
Mike believed in the phrase, "Go big or go home." At least, he had big plans for his home. One of his more ambitious, and ultimately problematic, additions was an 8-foot boiler he wanted to heat the house. Designed to resemble a train engine, it was built half into the living room and half into a specially constructed shed outside. While a testament to his passion for trains, this heating system, thankfully, never became functional. Considering the pressure it was under, it posed a significant risk to the entire neighborhood. This audacious project represented a unique challenge that required a different approach to make the house truly livable.

A small army of helpers
Making The Big Red House livable was a monumental task, requiring the dedication of many hands. A diverse group of individuals contributed to its transformation, each one being an interesting; true Montana character. Some were invaluable, offering genuine help and expertise. Amidst this colorful cast, one individual stood out, leaving an indelible mark on the house's character and truly making it a home.

Dave's lasting legacy
The true heart and character of The Big Red House can be attributed to Dave. Quiet, tall, and lanky, with long, stringy hair, Dave was more than just a craftsman. He was a volunteer fireman, a Sheridan native, a devoted friend to the house cat, and an expert who built beautiful bathrooms and added thoughtful details throughout the home. His vast expertise transformed the house into a real home, and his unique "fingerprint" is evident everywhere you look. Sadly, Dave passed away too early, leaving his incredible work unfinished, but his spirit lives on in every corner of The Big Red House.
